Since many of the decisions that impact public schools, educators, and students are decided in the halls of government, it is critical for the Virginia Education Association to play an active role in protecting the institution of public education.
The public education advocacy process involves the VEA taking positions on legislation, communicating these positions to elected officials, and then holding officials accountable. The VEA Legislator Report Card is one of the key factors used in determining VEA campaign support, candidate recommendations, and contributions from VEA’s political action committee—the VEA Fund for Children & Public Education (VEA-FCPE).
Virginia legislative members are rated on issues that align with VEA’s legislative priorities as determined by the association’s strategic goals; these issues are identified at the beginning of each legislative session and crafted into a legislative program to be approved by the association’s general membership at the annual VEA Delegate Assembly.
These same issues are included in legislative candidate questionnaires distributed by the VEA-FCPE. The VEA Legislator Report Card measures members of the Virginia General Assembly based on overall support for public education, educators, and students.
The VEA Government Relations and Research Department is pleased to announce the release of this year’s 2022 Legislator Report Card. We encourage local associations to distribute and share the report card with members of the association and the wider community.

According to the Economic Policy Institute, teachers in Virginia earn 67 cents on the dollar compared to other (non-teacher) college-educated workers. Virginia’s teacher wage penalty is the worst in the nation.
